How to sell websites to local businesses
The strongest pitch is not “you need a website.” It is a specific, credible connection between a customer action the business values and an experience you can improve.
Start with the customer action
“Modern design” is subjective. “Make it easier for a homeowner to request an emergency plumbing quote from a phone” is a business outcome. Map the path from discovery to decision: What question does the customer have? What proof reduces doubt? What action should be obvious? Which device and local context matter?
A simple local-business site often needs fewer pages than a seller expects, but each page needs a job. Services explain fit. Location and hours reduce uncertainty. Proof supports trust. Calls to action turn intent into a call, booking, direction request, or form submission.
Use a five-part opportunity note
- Observation: what you directly saw in a public source.
- Uncertainty: what you could not confirm.
- Business consequence: the customer action that may be harder.
- Proposed improvement: the smallest useful solution.
- Permission question: whether the owner wants to see it.
This structure prevents a common sales failure: converting an incomplete data point into an insulting conclusion. It also gives the owner an easy way to correct your research.
Build the demo around relevance
A proof of concept should demonstrate judgment, not simply prove that you can apply a template. Use the correct business name, category, service area, public contact information, and a plainly marked draft status. Write original copy around the likely customer decision. Do not publish misleading content as if it were authorized by the business.
| Demo element | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Headline | Is this clearly for the right customer and need? |
| Primary action | What should an interested visitor do next? |
| Services | Can the business solve this specific problem? |
| Location and hours | Can the customer use this business now? |
| Trust evidence | Why should the customer believe the promise? |
| Measurement plan | How will calls, forms or bookings be understood? |
A concise first conversation
Try: “Hi, is this the person who handles new-customer enquiries? I was researching businesses in your area and noticed the public listing does not link to a website. I may have missed it. If that is accurate, I made a short concept showing how customers could understand the service and contact you from mobile. Would you be open to a two-minute look?”
If the answer is no, respect it. If they already have a site, ask whether they want the old link corrected only if you can genuinely help. The goal is a qualified conversation, not overcoming every refusal.
Price the complete decision
A quote should specify discovery, copy, design, revisions, mobile support, publishing, domain and hosting responsibility, analytics, legal content responsibility, accessibility expectations, launch timing, support, and cancellation or handoff terms. Separate the setup project from ongoing care so the owner understands what each fee buys.
Do not justify price with imaginary revenue. If you model potential value, show assumptions: number of additional qualified inquiries, close rate, average sale, gross margin, and time horizon. Label the result as a scenario, not a forecast.
Handle objections with diagnosis
“We already get customers from social media.”
That may be sufficient. Ask whether customers ever struggle to find services, prices, hours, location, or a reliable booking path. A website should complement a working channel, not discredit it.
“We tried a website and it did nothing.”
Ask how it was discovered, what action it requested, whether measurement was installed, and how leads were followed up. The failure may be acquisition, conversion, offer, measurement, or operations-not the existence of pages.
“It costs too much.”
Reduce scope only when the smaller version can still create value. A focused one-page launch with a clear next step may be better than an underfunded large site.
Fake scarcity, guaranteed rankings, invented testimonials, or publishing an unauthorized “official” site may produce a faster reply but destroys the trust required for a durable client relationship.
Turn the sale into a retained account
After launch, agree on who handles content changes, hours, offers, analytics review, form testing, local listing updates, backups, security, domains, and performance. A secure owner-request path and documented response expectations make recurring care understandable rather than mysterious.
